Joseph Carlsmith is a PhD student in philosophy at NYU and a research assistant at the Centre for Effective Altruism. His current research focuses on our ethical relationship to the long-term future.

He has previously interned at the Louisiana Capital Assistance Center, a non-profit law office that defends people facing the death penalty; at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society; and at the Global Priorities Institute. He has also spent over a year of his life on silent meditation retreat, in chunks ranging from a few days to three months. He has a BPhil in philosophy from Oxford University, and a BA in philosophy from Yale University.
