Dr. Seth Baum is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute, a nonprofit and nonpartisan think tank. He is also a Research Affiliate of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at University of Cambridge and an advisor for 80,000 Hours. He leads an interdisciplinary research agenda including risk and policy analysis of catastrophic risks, focusing primarily on artificial intelligence and nuclear war, as well as foundational issues in global catastrophic risk and the far future. Baum received degrees in Optics, Applied Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering before completing a Ph.D. in Geography from Pennsylvania State University and a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University.
