As the Managing Director for India at the Good Food Institute (GFI), Varun is focused on building the plant-based and cell-based sector as a means of addressing the growing demand for animal foods and forestalling the growth of factory farming. He grew up in Mumbai as the son of a cancer surgeon and studied chemical and biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. During seven years in the US, Varun learned a great deal about healthcare systems and effective altruism. He moved back to India to set up a movement-building nonprofit before he was recruited by GFI in 2017. Aside from his work with GFI, Varun supports local groups and other effective charities in India.
